We all want children to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically… but growing up isn’t always easy! From navigating friendships to managing emotions, children and teens face challenges that can feel overwhelming. Group therapy is a powerful and supportive way to help them grow through these challenges—together!
What is Group Therapy for Kids and Teens?
Group therapy brings together a small number of children or adolescents who are facing similar challenges. Led by a licensed therapist, sessions offer a safe and structured space to explore emotions, build skills, and connect with others. Groups are often age-specific and tailored to developmental needs, so your child can feel comfortable and understood.
Benefits of Group Therapy
While individual therapy is incredibly valuable, group therapy offers its own set of unique benefits:
- Peer Connection and Support: One of the biggest gifts of group therapy is the chance for kids to realize they’re not alone! Whether they’re dealing with anxiety, friendship troubles, or self-esteem struggles, hearing “me too” from another child can be both comforting and empowering.
- Real-Life Social Skills Practice: Groups provide a natural setting to practice social-emotional skills in real time, like taking turns, expressing feelings, managing conflict, and showing empathy. It’s a safe space where kids can try, stumble, and grow with the support of peers and a trained therapist.
- A Confidence Boost: As children learn and use new skills, their confidence builds. Group settings often provide positive reinforcement from both the therapist and peers, which helps children feel seen, heard, and valued.
- Coping Tools That Stick: Through discussion, activities, and role play, children and teens learn practical strategies to regulate emotions, handle stress, and make healthy decisions. Practicing these tools with others helps reinforce them in ways that individual sessions alone may not.
Types of Therapy Groups We’ve Offered
We thoughtfully design our in-person and virtual therapy groups to meet participants where they are developmentally and emotionally. Some of the groups we have run include:
- Social Skills Groups: Perfect for children and teens who want to learn about navigating life transitions, healthy communication, emotional awareness and regulation, boundaries, mindful self-compassion, relationships, stress management, etc.
- Support Groups: These groups are focused on providing emotional validation, shared understanding, skill-building, and a sense of community among people who are going through similar experiences. They are often centered around a specific theme or challenge, such as anxiety, grief, parenting, divorce, etc.
- Identity and Self-Esteem Groups: These groups offer support around self-worth, social comparison, and building a strong sense of identity, which are great for preteens and teens exploring who they are.
Is Group Therapy Right for My Child?
Group therapy can benefit a wide range of children and teens—from those who are struggling socially or emotionally to those who would benefit from extra support and encouragement. During our consultation call, we’ll discuss your child’s needs, if a group setting is a good fit, and help you choose the right group based on age and goals.
